The best SEO MCP server is the one holding data your AI cannot otherwise see. For your own rankings, that is a Search Console server; for keywords and backlinks, Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking or Serpstat; for SERPs at scale, DataForSEO; for rank tracking, Nightwatch; for page content, Firecrawl; for conversions, Google Analytics. Most sites need two or three, not ten.

Prices are the vendors' list prices in their own currency on 2 October 2026, before tax. Every server here speaks the Model Context Protocol, so all of them work with Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients, though not every server supports every client equally (each entry says which ones the vendor names).

How we tested

Plainly: we run one of these servers ourselves every day, and that is Search Console MCP, because we build it. We have not run the other nine for this article. Everything we say about them comes from each vendor's own pages and documentation (product page, docs, pricing page, or GitHub README), read on 2 October 2026, and each entry links to its source. Where two of a vendor's own pages disagree, we say so rather than pick one.

We then ranked each server on four questions, in order: does it give the model data it cannot get any other way; how much setup stands between you and the first useful answer; what a month of real use costs; and whether it is safe to hand to a scheduled agent (read-only beats read-write for anything that runs unattended).

1. Search Console MCP: best for your own ranking data

First-party search performance is the one dataset no third-party index can replace: your actual queries, clicks, impressions, CTR and positions, straight from Google. Our Google Search Console MCP server is a hosted, read-only remote server for exactly that. You point your client at https://mcpsearchconsole.com/mcp, sign in with Google, and you are connected; there is no install, no API key and no Google Cloud project.

The tools cover the daily grind: search_analytics with filters and period comparisons, search_insights for striking-distance queries, low-CTR pages, cannibalization and movers, inspect_url for index status, list_sitemaps, page_speed for Core Web Vitals, and free site-health checks for DNS, redirects, robots.txt and TLS. It is read-only by default, which makes it a sane choice for the autonomous agent setups people increasingly run. It works in Claude, ChatGPT (Developer mode), Grok, Cursor, Codex and any remote MCP client.

Pricing: free to connect, with 15 data pulls a day and 40 a month on up to three properties; Solo is €4.99 a month for unlimited pulls, Team €29.99 a month (prices excluding VAT, see what counts as a data pull). It is ours, so judge accordingly. The honest alternative is the open-source route below: same Google API, more control, more setup.

2. Open-source GSC servers: best for self-hosting

If you would rather run the Search Console connection yourself, mcp-gsc is the most established open-source option (about 1.8k GitHub stars, MIT license, version 0.4.1 in September 2026 per its README). It offers 20 tools across properties, search analytics, URL inspection (including batch inspection) and sitemaps. It authenticates with your own Google OAuth client or a service account and runs locally through uvx or a clone. Its write tools (submitting sitemaps, adding or removing sites) are off by default and switched on with an environment variable, which is a sensible design.

The trade is explicit: you create the Google Cloud credentials and run the process next to your client. In exchange you own the whole pipeline, nothing meters your calls, and the code is yours to extend. Pick it when you are comfortable on the command line; pick a hosted server when the person connecting is an SEO rather than a developer, or when the client is remote (claude.ai and ChatGPT connect to a URL far more easily than to a process on your laptop). 3. Ahrefs MCP: best for backlinks

Search Console tells you how you perform on queries you already rank for. Ahrefs MCP opens the other half: keyword research, competitor analysis, AI Overview monitoring and the backlink index that Search Console does not have. Ask "who links to the top three results for this query" and this is the server answering.

According to Ahrefs' help center, the server is remote only (local setup is no longer supported), you connect with an MCP key generated in your account, and Ahrefs names Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, n8n and Lovable among supported clients. MCP is available from the Lite plan up, with no extra fee: each call draws on your plan's API units, at least 50 units a call. Ahrefs' pricing page lists Lite at $129 a month. That is a real change from a year ago, when API access sat on higher tiers: if you already pay for Ahrefs, connecting it now costs nothing extra. If you do not, start with your first-party data and add this when a link-building or content-gap project justifies the subscription.

4. Semrush MCP: best for competitive intelligence

Semrush MCP covers similar ground with a different center of gravity: keyword data, organic and paid search, competitive intelligence, traffic breakdowns, authority scores and backlinks, depending on your plan. It is read-only, authenticates with OAuth or an API key, and Semrush lists ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Cursor, VS Code and Claude Code as clients.

Access comes with Semrush One Starter or Pro+, SEO Classic Pro or Guru (each with 50,000 MCP API units that refresh on renewal), with a units package on the Advanced and Business tiers, or with a Trends API plan for traffic data. Semrush's pricing page lists Semrush One Starter at $199 a month. As with Ahrefs, you are paying for the subscription, not the MCP. Choose whichever index your team already trusts rather than connecting both.

5. SE Ranking MCP: best all-round suite at API prices

SE Ranking's MCP server is the broadest single server in this list: SE Ranking says it has more than 160 tools across keyword research, backlinks, domain analysis, website audits, SERP and rank tracking, and AI search visibility (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews). It is hosted at https://api.seranking.com/mcp with OAuth sign-in or an API key, and SE Ranking lists Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Codex, Windsurf, Zed and Gemini CLI as clients, with mcp-remote for older ones. Its docs also describe the server as open source under the MIT license.

What makes it stand out is the pricing model. According to SE Ranking's API pricing page, MCP is included on every API tier: a 14-day trial with 100,000 credits and no card, a pay-as-you-go Wallet at $50 a month for 250,000 credits, and a Standalone plan that needs no web-app subscription. Pick it if you want keywords, backlinks and audits from one server without a full seat-based suite. As with any credit-based API, watch the bill when an agent loops.

6. Serpstat MCP: best for keyword research on a budget

Serpstat MCP comes in two versions. The hosted HTTP version is a one-click OAuth connection that Serpstat says works in Claude (web, desktop and mobile) and ChatGPT (web, desktop and mobile). The self-hosted STDIO version, published as serpstat-mcp-server-js under MIT, runs on Node.js 18 with an API token and lets you choose which tool groups to enable; it targets Claude Desktop, Claude Code, ChatGPT Desktop, Gemini CLI and Cursor. Serpstat lists 63 tools across keyword research, competitor analysis, backlinks, site audits and rank tracking.

The pricing page is clear about the threshold: the $50 Individual plan has no API or MCP; the Team plan at $100 a month includes MCP with 200,000 API credits and one request per second; Agency at $410 adds 2,000,000 credits and ten requests per second. That makes Serpstat the cheapest seat-based suite here with MCP included, at the cost of a slower rate limit on Team.

7. DataForSEO MCP: best for SERP data at scale

DataForSEO is the builder's option: live SERP results, keyword data, DataForSEO Labs research, backlinks, on-page checks, business data and domain analytics behind a pay-as-you-go API, with no seat-based subscription. You can connect the hosted endpoint at https://mcp.dataforseo.com/v3/mcp with your API credentials, or run it locally with npx; the server itself is free and open source.

DataForSEO says calls start at roughly $0.002 to $0.024 each depending on the endpoint, with a $1 trial credit and a $50 minimum deposit after that. It suits programmatic questions ("fetch the top 10 for these 50 queries and compare title patterns") where per-call pricing beats a monthly tool. Expect a developer-flavored setup, and set a budget before an agent runs it unattended.

8. Nightwatch MCP: best for rank tracking

Nightwatch's SEO MCP exposes a rank tracker rather than a keyword index: live tracked positions across Google, Bing and YouTube by city, language or device, AI visibility (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity), keyword data, site audit findings and competitor share of voice. It is a hosted SSE endpoint at https://mcp.nightwatch.io/sse (also available as an npx package), authenticated with a scoped, read-only API key. Nightwatch lists Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, ChatGPT, Continue, Cline and Zed as clients. Backlink data is not mentioned.

On price, Nightwatch's own pages disagree on 2 October 2026. The pricing page says "the SEO MCP server is on every plan, including Starter" (€79 a month, 500 keywords), while the MCP page says it needs Professional (€159 a month) or above and is not in the free trial. Check with Nightwatch before buying Starter for MCP. Pick it when the question is "how did my tracked keywords move this week, by market", which Search Console's averaged positions answer less precisely.

9. Firecrawl MCP: best for crawling and content audits

SEO questions eventually leave the data layer and hit the pages themselves. Firecrawl's MCP server scrapes, crawls, maps and searches sites and returns clean, LLM-ready markdown, which turns "audit my category pages against the competitors" from a paste-fest into a single prompt. The hosted endpoint at mcp.firecrawl.dev takes OAuth sign-in or an API key, and Firecrawl's docs describe a keyless mode for search, scrape and parse within daily limits; you can also run it locally.

Firecrawl's pricing page lists a free plan with 1,000 credits a month and a Hobby plan at $19 a month ($16 billed yearly) for 5,000. Pair it with Search Console data: one server knows which pages underperform, the other reads what is actually on them.

10. Google Analytics MCP: best for closing the loop to conversions

Rankings are a means; revenue is the point. Google's own Analytics MCP server lets the model query GA4 (accounts and properties, core reports, funnels, realtime and custom dimensions) so you can join "what ranks" to "what converts". It is read-only (it asks for the Analytics read-only scope), Apache 2.0, and its repository marks it experimental.

It runs locally with pipx and Application Default Credentials from a Google Cloud project where you enable the Analytics Admin and Data APIs, so setup is closer to the open-source Search Console route than to a hosted URL. It is free beyond that. It is the missing piece for prioritization: a page worth improving is one where position 8 is leaving money on the table.

How to choose

• Your own rankings and index status: Search Console MCP (hosted) or mcp-gsc (self-hosted). Start here; it is the only free, first-party signal.
• Backlinks and competitor gaps: Ahrefs or Semrush if you already pay for one; SE Ranking or Serpstat if you want MCP access for less.
• Tracked positions by market and device: Nightwatch.
• Live SERPs at programmatic scale: DataForSEO.
• Reading and auditing page content: Firecrawl.
• Conversions and revenue: Google Analytics MCP.

It depends on what you already pay for. Ahrefs and Semrush both include MCP with their subscriptions, so use whichever index your team trusts. Without a subscription, SE Ranking (API Wallet from $50 a month) and Serpstat (Team plan, $100 a month) are the cheapest ways to get keyword volumes and difficulty into chat, and DataForSEO is cheapest per call for bulk lookups. Pair any of them with Search Console data, which shows the queries you already rank for.

What is the best MCP server for backlinks?

Ahrefs, if you have a subscription: its backlink index is its core product and MCP is included from the Lite plan. Semrush, SE Ranking, Serpstat and DataForSEO also expose backlink data through MCP. Search Console's own links report is not available through its API, so no Search Console server, ours included, gives you backlinks.
